In the columns set up (right), can you see where everyone would go on a column circulate?  Those looking out flip over, others step up – following the curved lines – to where the person in front of them had been.  If you brain isn’t melted yet, think of a coordinate.  Now there are THREE very end dancers looking in to make eye contact with the (two people!) at the other end of the column.  When they get to the middle, they’ll make a three hand star and “trade” – which means moving to the next position- 1/3 of a turn.  Don’t feel bad if you can’t visualize it yet.  Neither can we.  Check out the animation links in Clark’s paper to see it live.

The very centers(red) in the column setup is a box (think of center four in normal coumns).  They could do a scoot back, right?  The outfacers (girls here – round) do a pretty normal flip over.  The infacers step forward, join inside hands – three of them! – and “trade”.  In a three hand star, that’s moving to the next position, NOT back to where you came from.  So the guys will end up in a different position – facing out – and with a different partner.  Neat, huh?      <BACK   NEXT >
